What does the word ‘Unafan’ mean?
It’s short for ‘unabashed fan(s)’.
What IS Unafan?
It’s a project to…
- Unearth extraordinary (and primarily unheralded) people and the extraordinary things they’ve made, said, and done.
- Make these extraordinary people aware of each other.
- Organize small gatherings — online and in person — for combinations of these folks I’m confident will resonate with one another.
How will you unearth these folks?
Unafan will, fundamentally, be a growing tree of recorded audio celebrations.
All of these celebrations will come from people who have already had a celebration recorded about them.
Will everyone who’s celebrated be asked to pay it forward?
No. Only a small subset of them.
But every person I DO ask to record a celebration will actually be asked to record two. One reason is to make sure the overall corpus grows at a healthy rate. And the other reason will become clear when you read the answer to the following question.
How will people who record celebrations avoid offending all the people they did NOT celebrate?
Celebrators will be able to provide anyone they choose with a direct link to either of the two celebrations they’ve recorded. However, recipients of these links will not be able to re-share them or post them on social media.
As an additional safeguard against causing offense to those who are not celebrated, I will ask each potential celebrator to let me choose the two people they celebrate, drawn from a list of at least three that they provide to me.
How will each audio celebration get recorded?
Each one will get recorded during an audio interview with me, using our dedicated Unafan iPhone app. I’m already building it.
Do you own the unafan.com domain?
Yes. I also own unafans.com, unabashedfan.com, and unabashedfans.com.
So each celebrator will only be able to celebrate two more people?
At the moment, that’s the plan.
What does the phrase ‘unabashed fan’ mean to you?
For me, to be ‘an unabashed fan of person X’ means to have near-total confidence in…
- The quality of what X makes, says, and does, and
- The level of care and integrity they embody.
Will any of this cost money?
Those who participate before a yet-to-be-determined crossover date will get free access to celebrations forever.
What will be the monetization strategy after the crossover date?
Here’s the current plan…
People who start participating after the crossover date will choose from two subscription tiers, one of which will be free.
Folks who subscribe to the free tier will receive Y celebrations per month. Folks who subscribe to the paid tier will receive a significant multiple of Y.
What will the paid tier cost?
TBD.
Will Unafan have ads?
No.
Why are you starting this?
This, I hope, is the end-game idea that enables me to transform my Ted-the-Connector hobby into something that reaches many, many more people.
